A New Era of Community Support in Gravesend

The St George's Centre in Gravesend is proud to support the Safe Space initiative, launched by Gravesham Borough Council, a groundbreaking community support program designed to provide reassurance and assistance to residents and visitors in Gravesend.

Led by Community Safety Officer Dorota Trapl and supported by Town Centre Manager Graham Long, this initiative aims to foster a sense of security and unity within the community. We asked Dorota and Graham about the importance of the scheme.

Why is Safe Space Needed?

The primary goal of Safe Space is to enhance the overall safety and well-being of the local community. This initiative addresses previous misperceptions about safety in Gravesend by demonstrating how retailers, community groups and other stakeholders can collaborate to create a better and safer environment. Safe Space is not solely focused on crime prevention; it also serves as a hub where individuals can seek support and guidance on various issues. Trained personnel are available to assist or direct individuals to the appropriate resources, ensuring that everyone receives the help they need.
"The businesses and premises supporting this initiative have staff trained directly through the scheme, ensuring a consistent approach and maintaining high standards of support throughout Gravesend," explains Dorota Trapl.

"Our training covers the bystander effect, approaches to listening, and practical advice on where further help can be provided. This equips those wanting to support the local community to do so effectively in moments of need."

Who Can Access Safe Space

Safe Space is accessible to everyone, from children to the elderly, during standard retail hours. Efforts are underway to expand participation to businesses operating outside these hours, especially as Gravesend's late night economy grows. This expansion will allow more partners to join and enhance the support network available to the community.

How to Recognise Safe Space Locations

If you need a safe space to calm down and put your thoughts together, look for the Safe Space Sticker in the windows of Gravesham’s public spaces. Staff in these premises are specifically trained to help in situations such as fleeing from domestic abuse, being followed or feeling unsafe due to an incident. Upon arrival, simply tell the staff "I need a safe space" and they will assist you. You will also receive a leaflet with information on 24/7 help available.

Cost and Support

Initiated by the Police Crime Commissioner’s Office in 2022-23, Safe Space is now supported by the Community Safety Partnership. The program is fully funded and costs nothing for businesses to join, making it an accessible and valuable addition to the town's safety infrastructure.

Impact on the Town Centre

Graham Long emphasises the positive impact of the initiative:

"Safe Space helps to dismiss misconceptions about the local area by showing the tangible difference the local community can make when working together. This, in turn, brings confidence to the wider community."

The initiative also drives community action and is a significant factor in making Gravesend a preferred destination. By providing a Safe Space for everyone, the program contributes to building a stronger, more supportive community network.

Joining the Safe Space Initiative

Participants in the Safe Space initiative are carefully chosen and vetted to ensure they can adequately support the scheme. This program not only prepares the community for exciting local developments but also builds strong community links, offering a safer space if needed.

"The Safe Space initiative is a local support resource we hope no one needs, but it's reassuring to know it's there" concludes Dorota Trapl.
